Mid cycle bleeding (Ovulation Bleed)

Ovulation bleeding is vaginal bleeding during or immediately before and after ovulation. It is typically light spotting and lasts 1-2 days.

The bleeding is much lighter than your period and affects around 5% of women.

It is important to note that this is not your period.  The bleeding should not be heavy or painful.

What phase of your menstrual cycle do you experience mid cycle bleeding?

Ovulation bleeding during or immediately before or after ovulation.  Ovulation occurs in the middle of the menstrual cycle.

Causes of mid cycle bleeding

Ovulation spotting happens during ovulation, when an egg is released from an ovary. The change in hormones during ovulation can allow some of the uterine lining to shed. This will be very light and often goes unnoticed because it is so little.

Mid-cycle bleeding that is not related to a reproductive condition, such as fibroids, may be caused by lower oestrogen levels during the middle of the cycle.

How to manage mid cycle bleeding

It is useful to track bleeding, any unusual bleeding including when, checking if this is at the time of ovulation and how long it lasts for.

It is important to get any unusual bleeding checked by a doctor.
